Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Grbich, and you’re listening to the Pravo Wellness podcast, coming to you from right here in Menomonee Falls. Today we’re talking about something that affects pretty much every single person listening to this right now — and that’s posture. Specifically, why posture matters more than ever in a world where we are all glued to our screens.

Now, I know what some of you might be thinking. Posture? Really? That sounds like something my grandmother used to nag me about. But here’s the thing — this isn’t about sitting up straight to look polished. This is about what’s actually happening inside your body when you spend hours and hours hunched over a phone, a laptop, a tablet. And trust me, the effects are very real.

Let me paint you a picture. The average adult head weighs somewhere around ten to twelve pounds. That’s about the weight of a bowling ball sitting on top of your spine. Now, when you hold your head in a nice, neutral position — ears over your shoulders — your spine handles that weight really well. It’s designed for it. But the moment you start dropping your chin down toward your chest to look at your phone, that effective weight on your spine increases dramatically. Even just a couple inches of forward head tilt can multiply that load several times over. So your muscles, your joints, your discs — they’re all working overtime. Every single day.

Here’s what’s interesting. Most people don’t feel this right away. That’s actually part of what makes it sneaky. The body is incredibly adaptable. It will compensate, it will adjust, it will find a way to function. But over time, those compensations add up. You start noticing a nagging ache in your neck. Maybe your shoulders feel tight and rounded. Some people get tension headaches that seem to come out of nowhere. Others notice mid-back discomfort after sitting at a desk for a few hours. And a lot of folks just chalk it up to stress or getting older. But a big piece of what they’re experiencing is a posture problem that’s been building quietly for months — sometimes years.

So what can you actually do about this? A few things, and none of them are complicated. First, think about your screen height. Your computer monitor should be roughly at eye level. If you’re constantly looking down at a laptop on a table, that’s a problem worth fixing — even just propping it up can make a real difference. Second, take movement breaks. I always tell my patients — your next position is your best position. Sitting still for long stretches is hard on the body. Even standing up, rolling your shoulders back, and taking a couple deep breaths every thirty minutes or so goes a long way. And third, pay attention to your chin. Most of us have a habit of jutting our chin forward, especially when we’re focused on a screen. Try gently tucking your chin back — like you’re making a slight double chin. That simple move actually helps re-align your head over your spine.

Now, here’s when I’d encourage you to come in and see us. If you’re already dealing with regular neck pain, headaches, shoulder tightness, or that achy feeling between your shoulder blades — don’t just wait it out. Those are signs that your spine may already be under some stress. A chiropractic evaluation can help us figure out what’s actually going on and build a plan to get you feeling better and moving better. We also work with patients on posture rehab — not just adjustments, but actual strategies to retrain the way you hold yourself throughout the day.

The good news is this — posture issues are very addressable. You don’t have to just live with the discomfort. And you don’t need to throw your phone into a lake. You just need a little awareness and some support getting back on track.

Thanks so much for spending a few minutes with me today. If you’ve got questions or you’d like to schedule an evaluation, we’d love to hear from you. You can reach us at Pravo Wellness right here in Menomonee Falls. We’re here to help you feel your best — and stand a little taller while doing it. Take care, everybody.
